The Brandywine Ballet Company, supported by the West Chester University College of Visual and Performing Arts, has announced its 2008-09 performances of The Nutcracker to take place December 12-18 at the Emilie K. Asplundh Concert Hall in the Philips Memorial Building on the campus of West Chester University. This year’s performances are unique because special guest Jae Hoon Lim of Philadelphia’s Koresh Dance Company will partner with principal dancers Hannah Telthorster and Jaime Lennon in the beautiful Grande Pas de Deux as choreographed by the late former Ballet Master and New York City Principal Dancer, Richard Hoskinson. Additional new components of the production this year include a new Snow Scene by Ballet Mistress Nancy Page, featuring the complete version of pas and corps, as well as updated costumes in Act II for Angels, Marzipan, and Grande Pas.
A time-honored tradition for the entire family, Brandywine Ballet’s version of The Nutcracker is firmly rooted in the grand magnificence of the Victorian era, transporting audiences to the dreamy "Land of Sweets" in Act II. The production invites viewers to join Clara and her Nutcracker on an enchanted journey full of imagination, in which toy soldiers and mice battle fiercely, the Sugar Plum Fairy reigns in splendor, and a delightful cast of colorful characters of all ages grace the stage. The full-length ballet features over 80 area dancers and cast members.
Noted for its pronounced characterization of Drosselmeyer in Act I as the storyteller that sets the stage for Clara’s fantastic voyage to the “Land of Sweets” in Act II, Brandywine Ballet’s The Nutcracker has been hailed as one of the best in the Delaware Valley area, and consistently performs to sold-out audiences. Additionally, the production features stunning scenery, elegant costumes, exquisite choreography, Chester County’s most accomplished dancers, and, of course, Tchaikovsky's memorable score.
The Brandywine Ballet Company was founded in 1978 by Artistic Director Donna Muzio in West Chester, PA and has served as the region's premier source for classical and contemporary ballet. Numerous Brandywine Ballet alumni have launched their professional dance careers with the company, going on to dance for nationally recognized dance companies. The Brandywine Ballet's influence is evidenced by the number of guest artists and former dancers that return to the company to choreograph, perform, and mentor up-and-coming dancers. The company's current roster is the perfect embodiment of such high standards of training and performance.
